Robustness of 40 Gb/s ASK modulation formats in the practical system infrastructure.

In this work, we analyzed by means of numerical and laboratory experiments the resilience of 40 Gb/s amplitude shift keying modulation formats to transmission impairments in standard single-mode fiber lines as well as to optical filtering introduced by the optical add/drop multiplexer cascade. Our study is a pre-requisite to assess the implementation of cost-effective 40 Gb/s modulation technology in next generation high bit-rate robust optical transport networks. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
An FPGA-Based Software Defined Radio Platform for the 2.4GHz ISM Band

A prototype of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform has been successfully designed and tested implementing a reconfigurable IEEE 802.11 and ZigBee receiver. The system exploits the reconfiguration capability of an FPGA for implementing a number of receiver configurations that share the same RF front-end. Configurations can be switched at run time, or can share the available logic and radio resource.
Laser heterodyne displacement measuring using PLZT frequency shifter

Abstract The implementation of a frequency shifter based on lead lanthanum zirconate titanate ceramic (PLZT) and a voltage-controlled λ/4 plate is described. The capabilities of these elements are demonstrated with results from a Michelson-type laser heterodyne displacement measuring interferometer with 0.01 μm accuracy and 1 Hz display update rate.

We have implemented the so-called $\lambda$-Zeeman technique (LZT) to investigate individual hyperfine transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the Rb atoms in a strong external magnetic field $B$ in the range of $2500 - 5000$ G (recently it was established that LZT is very convenient for the range of $10 - 2500$ G). Atoms are confined in a nanometric thin cell (NTC) with the thickness $L = \lambda$, where $\lambda$ is the resonant wavelength 794 nm for Rb $D_1$ line. Probing the internal solar magnetic field through g-modes

The observation of g-mode candidates by the SoHO mission opens the possibility of probing the internal structure of the solar radiative zone (RZ) and the solar core more directly than possible via the use of the p-mode helioseismology data. We study the effect of rotation and RZ magnetic fields on g-mode frequencies. Using a self-consistent static MHD magnetic field model we show that a 1% g-mode frequency shift with respect to the Solar Seismic Model (SSeM) prediction, currently hinted in the GOLF data, can be obtained for magnetic fields as low as 300 kG, for current measured modes of radial order n=-20. Operation conditions and stability of a degenerate two-photon laser

Abstract The presence of a far off-resonant intermediate level in a degenerate three-level two-photon laser model manifests through a steady pump-dependent and a dynamic frequency shift on the laser equations. The steady shift strongly affects the pump threshold necessary for emission, preventing it in certain cases. The dynamic shift makes the frequency pulling/pushing to be intensity-dependent and substantially modify the domains of existence and stability of the lasing solution permitting stable operation for large cavity losses in certain cases.

On the sensitivity of bridge seismic response with local soil amplification

The paper presents a numerical sensitivity study of the local site effects on structural response. Following a recently developed model of spatial coherency and a concept of a simple site coefficient the local site effects are modelled as filtrations of excitation processes with a frequency shift. An analysis of a bridge response with supports founded on different soils is carried out. The joint effects of dynamic response and pseudostatic motion are considered. Two types of response are analysed: longitudinal and transverse. The differences between dynamic displacements and force responses are pointed out.
